After surgery: what determines your recovery speed
Published: · Konstantinos Varvagiannis, Physiotherapist
Two people with the same operation can follow very different paths. The reasons are largely manageable.
Starting early, staying consistent and sleeping well affect recovery more than age does. Muscle mass is lost quickly and regained slowly.
We begin with isometric contractions and non-weight-bearing mobility where permitted, so muscle tone is preserved until full loading is cleared.
Communication with your surgeon is part of the process: the programme adapts to healing timelines, not the other way round.
